Shootings at Texas Base Kill at Least 12; Dozens Hurt

At least 12 people were killed and 31 wounded Thursday afternoon in a shooting at a military installation in Fort Hood, Texas, according to military spokesmen. Lt. General Bob Cone said in Texas that the two alleged shooters were Army soldiers who opened fire in a “readiness facility.”

Without even reading the details of this, my immediate thoughts are: a training facility dedicated to teaching young people how to become murderers - mission accomplished.

Food Not Bombs? Bullets Not Food

Yee-Haw!

Bullets are in demand as the nation's appetite for firearms has soared. U.S. gun sales are up since the 2008 presidential election, during which the National Rifle Assn. poured millions of dollars into advertisements suggesting that Democrat Barack Obama would move to restrict gun sales if elected.

Armed Protesters At Townhall Meetings

Like wow. Just when you thought things couldn't possibly get uglier...

From today's Democracy Now...

Armed Protesters Attend Anti-Obama Rally in Phoenix

In news from this country, gun control advocates have expressed concern over the growing number of armed protesters attending town hall meetings and speeches by President Obama. On Monday, police in Phoenix reported at least a dozen protesters were carrying arms near a convention hall where President Obama spoke. At least one man had an AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle slung over his shoulder. Police made no arrests, citing a state law that allows people to carry unconcealed guns. On August 11, police arrested a man for having a loaded, unlicensed gun in his car near a New Hampshire school where Obama later held a healthcare forum. In a separate incident, another man outside that same event displayed a gun in a holster on his leg. Protesters also brought guns to recent town hall meetings on healthcare in Tennessee and Arizona. On Monday, Republican Congressman Phil Gingrey appeared on Hardball with Chris Matthews and defended the right of protesters to be armed.

Supremacy Crimes

Whenever i get into conversations about the pandemic of suicidal gunmen in this country, i always cite this article by Gloria Steinem written shortly after Columbine ten years ago. I just found an online version of it to share...

"These "senseless" killings begin to seem less mysterious when you consider that they were committed disproportionately by white, non-poor males, the group most likely to become hooked on the drug of superiority. It's a drug pushed by a male-dominant culture that presents dominance as a natural right; a racist hierarchy that falsely elevates whiteness; a materialist society that equates superiority with possessions, and a homophobic one that empowers only one form of sexuality.

Democrats Holding Off on Restoring Gun Ban

Democrats to Hold Off on Restoring Semi-Automatic Assault Gun Ban

From today's Democracy Now...

Newsweek is reporting the Obama administration has abandoned plans to restore a federal ban on certain semi-automatic assault guns despite a recent spate of killings. On Sunday, California Senator Dianne Feinstein told 60 Minutes she plans to hold off trying to renew the ban that she authored in 1994.

Leslie Stahl: “There is some sense that the President has so many crisis issues on his plate right now that the idea of bringing up guns, which is considered part of the culture wars, would be such a diversion.”

Sen. Feinstein: “I agree with you. I wouldn’t bring it up now.”

Stahl: “So you’re going to hold off?”

Feinstein: “That’s correct. I’ll pick the time and the place, no question about that.”

6 killed in home shooting, this time in Santa Clara

I remember George Carlin once saying something to the effect, "There's no healing after a tragedy, just a brief pause before the next one."

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Six people were shot to death, at least three of them children, and another person was critically wounded in an apparent murder-suicide at an upscale home in Silicon Valley, police said Monday. The suspect appeared to be among the dead in the apparent "family on family" violence, Lt. Phil Cooke said.

6 Die In Nursing Home Shooting

It all started w/ Santa Claus. Specifically an armed Santa Claus who shot 8 people dead during a holiday party last December. Yup, that inspired me. Cuz' growing up in America, you're privy to lots and lots of ugly news but that one really cut me deep. Columbine, Virginia Tech, it all kinda blurs together over the decades.

Shootings in shopping malls, churches, schools, workplaces - where ever people gather, there have been suicidal rampages by angry, impotent, mentally ill men - mostly white. And yet, gun laws in this country remain lax as ever - so lax that drug dealers from Mexico have resorted to getting their firearms from the across the border. What's worse, the language hasn't even changed to properly frame the issue - terms like "supremacy crime" as coined by Gloria Steinem after Columbine, that links male violence with men's inability to be in charge of their surroundings despite the intense pressure this patriachical culture puts on them, have not become a part of the discourse.

Instead of referring to these men as "suicidal killers," the corporate media still uses soft language like "shooting spree." As if they were going shopping. While the occupied people of Palestine are often derided as a bunch of "Islamic militant suicide bombers," our culture can't seem to look itself in the mirror and recognize how violent it really is. But guns don't kill people - perhaps, but having them so easily available doesn't help.

So i started this blog at the beginning of the year to chart all the shootings. i think we average about two a month as there's probably a lot more that i don't catch. today's shooting took place in a nursing home...

CARTHAGE, N.C. (AP) — A gunman opened fire at a North Carolina nursing home Sunday morning, killing at least six people and wounding several others, police said.

The gunman was also injured before he was apprehended by police after the 10 a.m. shooting at Pinelake Health and Rehab in the town of Carthage, Police Chief Chris McKenzie told several television stations. A police officer was also hurt....

Repo Man Kills 67 Year Retiree

From today's AP...

"With the U.S. dealing with an economic slide that has cost millions of jobs, the number of vehicle repossessions is expected to rise 5 percent this year. That's after it jumped 12 percent to 1.67 million nationally in 2008, said Tom Webb, chief economist with Manheim Consulting, an automotive marketing firm. That followed a 9 percent increase in 2007, creating more opportunities for bad outcomes in an industry where armed confrontations and threats happen every day."

Guns + Mass Layoffs = Suicides

From Alternet.org...

The body count is still rising. For months on end, marked by bankruptcies, foreclosures, evictions, and layoffs, the economic meltdown has taken a heavy toll on Americans. In response, a range of extreme acts including suicide, self-inflicted injury, murder, and arson have hit the local news. By October 2008, an analysis of press reports nationwide indicated that an epidemic of tragedies spurred by the financial crisis had already spread from Pasadena, California, to Taunton, Massachusetts, from Roseville, Minnesota, to Ocala, Florida.
